How to remove duplicate contacts in outlook

This happened to me when my activesync enabled smart phone was replaced. The verizon rep transferred my contacts from the old phone to the new phone. Why? I don’t know. Well I have my contacts syncing to my exchange personal contacts. So on my phone after I added my active sync settings, BAM, it started syncing my email, calendar items, and what do you know, contacts. What came about was duplicate entries, both on my phone and my outlook. Of course, this is just one example of getting duplicate contacts, 600 of them.

This procedure will work for Outlook 2003 and 2007 but some of the menu items are slightly different. I am using Outlook 2007.

What we are going to do is sort the contacts by the modified date, so we can just delete the newly synchronized items.

  • Click on contacts
  • Click view on the menu, then current view, and phone list
  • Click view, arrange by, custom
  • Click fields
  • Under available fields select modified, and add it to the other column.
  • Make sure modified is at the top of the list
  • Click OK twice
  • Now on your contacts sort option, click modified.
  • You will notice the date and time stamp, choose the one that is most recent and highlight all those items and hit delete.

You will now have half as many contacts, which you should.
